What is Android?

Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google, based on The Linux kernel and designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. After launching 2003, Android is the most popular operating system and used for a variety of purposes, including running mobile apps, taking photos, sending messages, etc. 

Course Overview

After establishing solid programming fundamentals in Java and JavaScript, this course introduces students to the Android framework used to develop mobile apps.

  • Week 1: Introduction to Android
  • Week 2: Data Persistence
  • Week 3: Web Services
  • Week 4: Android APIs and Material Design
  • Week 5: Group Projects

Android development is used in everything from phones to tablets to watches, and companies hiring Android developers range from small startups to giant enterprises. Our first Android class finishes in late 2015, and Portland companies who helped us get it off the ground include eBay and Uncorked Studios.
